Ali Bakar

Prof. Sheikh received a Bsc (Chemistry/Statistics) from the University of Dar es Salaam from 1996-1999, and an M.S. and Ph.D (Environmental and Marine sciences,specialized on Environmental Analytical Chemistry and marine ecotoxicology) from the National University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa Japan between 2000 and 2008. He was awarded a Post Doc by the Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) from 2008-2010. He was a senior research fellow under the CV Raman at University of Bangalore, India (2012). He is also among a few Harvard Kennedy Governance School alumnus of Innovation for economic development training (2014) and scientific translation to policy issues (2019) from Harvard University (USA) and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Brighton UK, respectively.

Sheikh served as a Director of Research (Physical Sciences) at the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) from 2017-2020. He is currently a Full Professor of Environmental Analytical Chemistry and Marine Ecotoxicology at the State University of Zanzibar. His research interests span on marine/aquatic ecosystem health. Much of his work has been on analyzing toxicological effects of hazardous chemicals in marine ecosystems. He has given numerous invited talks in the topic of marine pollution and ecotoxicology. Prof Sheikh has been working with renowned research groups from Denmark, Japan, Germany,Belgium, Malaysia, UK etc.

Prof. Sheikh is author or co-author of over 40 refereed scientific papers appeared in reputable journals such as Marine Pollution Bulletin, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, International journal of environmental Analytical chemistry, Regional studies in Marine Science Journal and JMIR Res Protoc to mention a few. He served as a team leader or an active team player of various multinational funded research projects such as BSU I & II (DANIDA), SUTAS, HDIF (DFID), VLIR-UOS South Initiative among others. In addition, he has been an active consultant in various bilateral and private projects, in some cases collaborate with broad global consultant networks e.g SOFRECO (France), SHAPIRA HELLERMAN PLANNERS (Israel), JERI(Japan/JICA), OPMAC (Japan/JICA), UK etc.

He is also a member of various research, academic and Governing Boards and Committees e.g Ifakara Health Institute Governing Board, University of Dar es Salaam, UDOM, Board of Governors, International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Trieste, Italy, Assistant Editor -in -chief of East African Science and Technology Journal of Science, Technology and Innovation, National Bio-safety Committee, Vice ChairBoard of Directors Zanzibar Health Research Institute, Chair- Private Hospital Board Zanzibar, Chair Board School of Health, Public and Environmental Health Board, focal point for Sub-Saharan Science Granting Council (SGCI) and Global Research Council (GRC) to mention a few.
